Could it be possible to add a sustain pedal to an OAX1 (and other models)?
Obviously there are no assignable foot pedal inputs as is kind of strange. Question is if it is possible to connect a sustain pedal through midi? However the manual does not have a recieve midi 1 chart. It says it send sustain CC64 on midi 1 out but nothing about recive except for midi input 2, said to be used for sequencer, and there CC64 is not mentioned.
Otherwise one seem to be only able to use the left and right switches on the expression pedal for sustain (separately left and right switch for upper lower or one switch for both). Not as comfortable as a sustain pedal but also one could use those for other things than sustain.
I’ll be out of the studio for a few hours this morning. I don’t have a MIDI sustain pedal, but I can test it by sending cc64 to OAX from our DAW. I’m pretty sure that it will work. I’ll set up a small test later today and update this post with my findings later this afternoon or in the morning.
I did a quick test using a DAW sending CC64. As I suspected, it’s no issue to receive CC64 on MIDI In1 or MIDI In2. In my case, an OAX700. I expect your challenge will be finding a sustain pedal with a MIDI DIN connector vs. the more standard 1/4 jack that most of them have.
In addition, I tested sending CC7 (volume) and CC11 (expression). They also worked as expected.
It is not exactly the configuration you are asking about, but it does validate that OAX accepts the controllers mentioned without issue.
Hopefully, that helps. Questions, please feel free to ask.
Thanks a lot Curt.
So one could use something like Midi Solution Footswitch controller or Audiofront Midi Expression, connect and ordinary foot (sustain) pedal to it and let it send midi sustain to OAX or obviously a couple of other possible CC:s.
Agreed. Just looked up the Midi Solution Footswitch controller. That should do the trick for sending CC64. I wasn’t aware of that device. Pretty Slick!
Should you go this route, please update everyone. I’d be interested to hear how it goes.
