In support of the 4th of July weekend, we have released two additional songs this week. We usually go with #tuesdaytunes, but this time we have #thursdaytunes.
First up, we have “America the Beautiful.” Katharine Lee Bates wrote the lyrics, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. One interesting point. The two never met.
We follow that up with “God Bless America.” Written by Irving Berlin during World War I in 1918 and revised by him in the run-up to World War II in 1938. The later version was notably recorded by Kate Smith, becoming her signature song.
